Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle Meets Indian Leaders to Deepen Economic and Reconstruction Links

Nepal’s Minister for Finance, Dr. Swarnim Wagle, concluded a series of high-level diplomatic and economic discussions in New Delhi aimed at securing support for post-flood reconstruction and expanding long-term trade, energy, and investment ties between Nepal and India.

During his three-day official visit, Dr. Wagle met with key cabinet ministers in the Indian government, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Focus on Post-Disaster Reconstruction & Relief

Following devastating flash floods along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors in Nepal, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed deep condolences for the loss of lives and widespread infrastructure damage. Minister Wagle expressed Nepal’s gratitude to India for its immediate assistance in rescue operations and flood relief effort.

Discussions between Dr. Wagle and Minister Sitharaman centered heavily on technical and financial support for Nepal’s post-disaster rebuilding strategy. India reiterated its commitment to supporting recovery and long-term infrastructure rehabilitation in affected border districts.

Strengthening Energy and Trade Connectivity

Addressing the broader economic relationship, both sides reviewed progress on bilateral trade frameworks, cross-border energy transmission, and connectivity projects. “Discussed ways to strengthen our overall cooperation, especially in economic, energy, and connectivity domains,” EAM S. Jaishankar noted following the talks.

Outreach to Indian Business Leaders

In addition to government-to-government dialogues, Finance Minister Wagle addressed an investment interaction hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi. He urged Indian investors and business houses to view Nepal as a strategic partner for manufacturing and regional supply chains rather than just a destination for exports.

Highlighting priority growth sectors—including clean energy, digital economy, high-value agriculture, and wellness tourism—Dr. Wagle assured investors of Nepal’s ongoing fiscal and structural reforms aimed at improving the ease of doing business. Participating Indian executives expressed strong interest in expanding operations in Nepal under emerging bilateral trade initiatives.
