A severe cold wave has intensified across Nepal’s Terai and hilly regions, bringing dense fog, plunging temperatures, and harsh early-morning conditions that are disrupting daily life in several districts.
Over the past few days, thick fog has blanketed major parts of the Terai, significantly reducing visibility during morning hours and affecting road traffic, domestic flights, and school routines. In many areas, the fog has been lingering until late morning, delaying travel and daily activities.
Temperatures have dropped sharply in both the plains and higher elevations, with residents reporting biting cold, especially during the night and early morning. The cold wave has forced people to rely heavily on heaters, firewood, and warm clothing, while outdoor laborers and farmers are facing growing difficulties in continuing regular work.
Health officials have warned that the prolonged cold may increase cases of seasonal illnesses, particularly among children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems. Hospitals and health posts in affected districts have reported a rise in patients suffering from cold-related ailments.
Meteorologists say the cold spell is likely to persist for a few more days, urging the public to take necessary precautions. Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary early-morning travel, ensure proper heating indoors, and pay special attention to vulnerable groups as winter conditions continue to intensify across the country.
