The government will now issue a receipt featuring a photo and QR code to individuals who pass the driving license trial, as it is currently unable to provide smart cards immediately. This new measure includes adding a photo to the receipt as an interim solution.
Traffic police will be equipped with machines to scan QR codes, according to Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal. The delay in distributing smart licenses prompted the adoption of this temporary approach.
Approximately 1.5 million people who have passed the driving test are still waiting for their smart cards. Due to technical issues with the Department of Transport Management’s machines, which are unable to read newly purchased cards, an alternative solution was necessary. The federal government has also asked provinces to print cards locally, except for essential cases.
A committee, chaired by the Federal Minister for Physical Infrastructure, has been established to resolve the issue. After Bagmati Province announced plans to print the cards independently, other provinces have also begun preparing to do the same.
