Incessant monsoon rainfall across the country has triggered severe landslides and flash floods, blocking multiple arterial highways and prompting safety advisories from disaster management authorities.
According to the Department of Roads and Nepal Police, continuous debris flows have completely shut down or restricted traffic on over a dozen strategic road corridors, including sections of the BP Highway, Araniko Highway, Mechi Highway, and Kanti Lokpath. Major blockages reported in Sindhupalchok, Ilam, Baglung, and Panchthar have left long lines of cargo and passenger vehicles stranded.
To minimize risks to commuters during peak rainfall hours, local administrations have enforced mandatory nighttime travel bans along high-risk routes. Vehicular movement on the Khurkot–Nepalthok–Katunje Besi stretch of the BP Highway is currently suspended between 6:00 PM and 4:00 AM, while night transit along Makwanpur’s Kanti Lokpath has also been halted until weather conditions improve.
Heavy equipment and clearing crews have been deployed to high-hazard zones to remove mud and boulders as conditions permit. However, with the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology forecasting continued rainfall across Bagmati, Koshi, and Gandaki provinces, security officials have urged travellers to avoid unnecessary journeys and verify real-time road status with local police before departing.
