The local government has issued a final warning to people living in illegal settlements along the city’s riverbanks. Residents have been told they must pack their belongings and leave by this evening.
The Deadline
The District Administration Office (DAO) of Kathmandu announced that the time for voluntary moving ends today. Starting at 7:00 AM tomorrow, May 1, authorities will begin a “forced clearance” operation. This means heavy machinery and teams will be sent in to remove any structures that are still standing.
Security on Standby
To make sure the process happens quickly, a large number of security personnel have been called in. Both the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force are on standby. Their job is to keep the peace and help residents move their personal items and livestock to safer locations before the demolition begins.
Why Is This Happening?
The city is clearing these areas to clean up the river corridors and improve drainage before the heavy monsoon rains arrive. While the government says this is necessary for the city’s safety, it is a difficult time for the families living there. Many are currently moving their things into temporary shelters provided by the city in Kirtipur and at Dasharath Stadium.
With the clock ticking, the riverbanks are busy today as families rush to move their lives before the morning deadline.
