North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has indicated that missile development will remain a priority over the next five years, according to state media reports.

During visits to major munitions enterprises in the last quarter of 2025, Kim stressed the importance of strengthening the country’s military capabilities, saying that the missile and shell production sector is crucial for boosting the nation’s war deterrent.

He also approved draft plans for modernising key munitions factories, which are set to be submitted to a major party congress expected in early 2026. That congress will outline North Korea’s strategic direction through 2031.

The announcement comes as Kim has also been involved in overseeing the construction of an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered submarine, accompanied by his daughter — seen by many as a potential successor — and following recent test-firings of long-range surface-to-air missiles.
