Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has approved the printing of 420 million new Rs 50 banknotes through a Chinese security printing company, aiming to address increasing demand for small-denomination currency across the country.
According to officials, the decision follows a growing shortage of lower-value notes in circulation, particularly in rural markets where cash transactions remain dominant. The central bank noted that printing abroad ensures faster delivery and higher security standards compared to domestic options.
The new notes, once delivered, will gradually enter circulation through commercial banks and NRB branches. Authorities say the move is part of a broader plan to modernize Nepal’s currency supply and replace worn-out notes currently in use.
NRB has also indicated that similar replenishment orders for other denominations may follow based on the country’s liquidity and circulation needs.
