The Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a weather advisory warning of a five-day streak of heavy rainfall expected across Nepal from September 24 to 28. The imminent wet spell is driven by a low-pressure weather system originating over the North Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, which is currently moving in a west-northwesterly direction.
According to meteorologists, the system is expected to interact with active westerly winds affecting Nepal. As dry air from northwestern India blocks the system’s westward progression, monsoon moisture will be pushed directly toward the Himalayas, potentially triggering intense downpours across several parts of the country—with western and central regions facing the highest risk. Global numerical weather models indicate that some areas could receive cumulative rainfall exceeding 400 mm over the five-day period.
Authorities and disaster risk management agencies have urged local communities and farmers to take necessary precautions. With soil already saturated from recent monsoon activity and paddy crops reaching harvest season, experts warn that renewed downpours could trigger severe landslides, flash floods on major river basins, and significant agricultural losses.
