Women across Nepal are observing the principal day of Haritalika Teej today with traditional rituals and religious fervor.To facilitate the nationwide celebrations and religious observances, the Government of Nepal has declared a public holiday for women across the country.
From early morning, women draped in traditional red saris, green glass bangles, and pote gathered at Shiva shrines nationwide. Major gathering sites, including the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, saw massive turnouts of devotees offering prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Worshippers are keeping a strict Nirjala (waterless) fast throughout the day—married women praying for the long life, health, and prosperity of their families, while unmarried women seek suitable life partners.
The fasting day marks the central milestone of a four-day cultural sequence that began with the traditional midnight feast of Dar. Following today’s rituals and community gatherings, the celebrations will continue with Ganesh Chaturthi tomorrow, September 15, and officially conclude with Rishi Panchami on Wednesday, September 16.
