Chaos erupted at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner late Saturday night as President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were rushed from the ballroom following reports of gunfire in the hotel lobby.
Chaos in the Ballroom
The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. ET at the Washington Hilton, just as guests had begun their meals.Witnesses described a scene of sudden panic as Secret Service agents stormed the head table, shouting for attendees to “get down.”
Hundreds of journalists, celebrities, and high-ranking government officials—including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth—were seen ducking under tables as tactical teams with rifles took positions across the hall.
The Suspect and Security Breach
The Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service confirmed that a lone gunman attempted to breach a security checkpoint near the ballroom entrance. The suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California.

Presidential Response
Following the evacuation, President Trump held an impromptu press briefing at the White House. He praised the “incredible” actions of law enforcement and confirmed he was unharmed.
“A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service,” Trump told reporters. When asked if he believed he was the target, he responded, “I guess. These people are crazy.”
Aftermath
The WHCA dinner, which Trump was attending for the first time as President, was officially cancelled for the evening. WHCA President Weijia Jiang stated that the event would be rescheduled within 30 days.
Security remains high throughout the District of Columbia as the FBI and Secret Service continue to investigate the suspect’s motives and how he managed to bring multiple weapons into the high-profile venue. The Washington Hilton has historically been a site of concern; it was the same location where President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
