In a historic shift for the Himalayan nation, Balendra Shah (Balen) has been officially appointed as the Prime Minister of Nepal today, March 27, 2026.
President Ramchandra Paudel appointed Shah under Article 76(1) of the Constitution following the Rastriya Swatantra Party’s (RSP) landslide victory in the March 5 general elections. At 35 years old, the structural engineer and former rapper has made history as the youngest person to ever hold the country’s top executive office.
The “Auspicious” 12:34 PM Swearing-In
The timing of the oath-taking ceremony at Sheetal Niwas was not accidental. On the advice of astrologers and following a unique “1-2-3-4” numerological pattern, the ceremony was set for exactly 12:34 PM.
The event was a blend of Nepal’s rich cultural and religious traditions, featuring:
-
Shankhanaad: The traditional blowing of conch shells.
-
Vedic Recitations: 108 Hindu Batuks (young Brahmins) performing Swasti Shanti prayers.
-
Buddhist Chanting: 16 Buddhist monks conducting Ashtamangal chants.
A First for the Madheshi Community
Beyond his age, Balen’s appointment marks another major milestone: he is the first Prime Minister of Madheshi origin in Nepal’s history. This transition comes after his party secured a massive 182 seats in the House of Representatives, effectively ending the decades-long dominance of traditional political parties.
Immediate Plans
Sources close to the new Prime Minister indicate he will begin his tenure with a “100-day action plan” focused on good governance and anti-corruption. He is expected to form a small, efficient cabinet of 15 to 18 ministers, moving away from the large, traditional cabinets of the past.
The swearing-in today coincides with Ram Navami, adding to the public sense of a “new beginning” for the country.
