Nepal earned approximately US$9.436 million in 2025 by exporting electricity to Bangladesh, marking a significant milestone in the country’s regional power trade efforts. The earnings reflect Nepal’s growing capacity to generate surplus electricity and expand its energy market beyond domestic consumption.
The export of hydropower to Bangladesh was facilitated through regional power trade arrangements, highlighting increased cooperation among South Asian countries in the energy sector. Officials say the development not only boosts Nepal’s foreign exchange earnings but also strengthens its position as a potential clean energy supplier in the region.
With several hydropower projects nearing completion and cross-border transmission infrastructure improving, Nepal aims to further expand electricity exports to neighboring countries in the coming years. The government views regional power trade as a key component of long-term economic growth and energy sustainability.
