A recent bird census conducted in Banke district has recorded 32 species of aquatic birds that migrated to the region during the winter. The survey, carried out along the Rapti River in Kusum, Raptisonari Rural Municipality-1, and other water bodies in the district, revealed a diverse range of migratory water birds.
Bird conservationist Ashish Chaudhary noted that 20 species of winter-visiting water birds were identified in Kanti Lake, while a total of 32 species were documented across the district. He emphasized that effective wetland conservation and improved infrastructure management could further increase the number of birds in the area.
Ornithologist Ram Shahi reported sightings of Ruddy Shelduck, Siberian birds, and species migrating from Russia during the census. However, he highlighted concerns over shrinking habitats for aquatic birds due to garbage accumulation in ponds and lakes. Shahi also pointed out that noise pollution from picnic spots near these water bodies poses additional risks to bird habitats.
The survey, conducted by the Banke National Park and Buffer Zone community, recorded 276 birds, including species such as Gadwall and Lesser Whistling Duck. Information Officer Mandeep Pangeni of Banke National Park stated that the two-day survey, led by ornithologist Joshi, covered areas around the Rapti River, local forests, and Kanti and Sutaiya ponds. The habitats in these areas were found to be safe for the birds.
Pangeni expressed optimism that annual surveys would contribute to better habitat management and conservation efforts for the avian population in the region.
