Human Rights Day being observed today

International Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10, marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. In Nepal, this day highlights the country’s human rights challenges and progress.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recently submitted its 2022/23 annual report to President Ramchandra Paudel. The report detailed 120 new complaints and 13,233 cases forwarded to relevant agencies. Investigations were completed on 1,770 cases, with 368 identified as human rights violations. Out of 1,407 past recommendations, 15.3% were fully implemented, 39.2% partially implemented, and 45.5% unimplemented.

This year, NHRC issued 1,573 recommendations, including Rs. 7.4 million in compensation for 90 victims, though implementation remains low. The report criticized the government’s lack of commitment to fostering a culture of human rights. Additionally, 63,718 complaints have been lodged with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to date.
